Expedition Team Climbs Third Highest Peak in Africa Relying On Kestrel Pocket Meter

The team is relying on the Kestrel Pocket Weather Tracker to monitor potentially dangerous environmental conditions at peak elevations reaching almost 17,000 feet. Their guiding instrument on this journey, the Kestrel 4500 Pocket Weather Tracker, is as small as a cell phone yet has monitoring and tracking capabilities large enough to take on this cross-continental challenge.

Kestrel Pocket Weather tracker is of particular use for the SOLIO 2008 Mount Stanley team as they record data for present use and later research. The Expedition team will study the impact of climate change on the Rwenzori glaciers and the effects on the surrounding community. The glaciers are predicted to disappear within twenty years.
The Kestrel 4500 is more than just a weather meter for checking current conditions, it's a tracking device that can log environmental data for extended periods of time. The 2000-data point log is customizable, allowing users to determine automatic storage intervals as well as store information manually with a single button press. Once programmed, the unit “wakes up” at the programmed interval to measure and store all the readings. The data can then be reviewed in graphical form with a scrolling cursor that tells the date, time and value for each reading. It can also be uploaded to a computer using the optional Kestrel Interface.

The Kestrel 4500 features a digital compass, adding heading, wind direction, headwind, tailwind and crosswind readings to its list of features. The 3.6 ounce instrument measures: wind speed, wind direction, crosswind, headwind/tailwind, temperature, wind chill, relative humidity, dewpoint, heat stress index, barometric pressure, altitude, density altitude and wet bulb temperature.

Lead explorer Julian Monroe Fisher F.R.G.S. and his team plan to donate portable solar battery chargers and additional support equipment to the Ugandan Wildlife Authority, the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services and to other support agencies. The team departed from Austria on this past Saturday, July 5 and is expected to conclude in early August 2008.Their ultimate destination is Mount Stanley's Margherita Peak, the highest peak in Uganda's Rwenzori Mountains. The Rwenzori Mountains, historically known as the ‘Mountains of the Moon', are located on the border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.
