WALNUT CREEK, CA - (September 9th, 2019) - We love the outdoors, and we really, really love outdoor gear. Unfortunately, most outdoor gear is made of unsustainable materials like plastic, which is not great for this planet we so love exploring. This tension between love of the wild and love of gear was bothering Doug Rieck, so he started Eukarya, an outdoor goods company determined to design outdoor gear without the chemically engineered plastics and synthetic materials that have become oh-so-common in the outdoor industry. Eukarya’s first product, a high-performance headlamp, hand-crafted from sustainable wood and recycled aluminum, has just launched on Kickstarter. The headlamp has a maximum output of 300 lumens, is 99% plastic-free and features a rechargeable battery that guarantees up to 15 hours of light, high/low and strobe modes, and at 85g, weighs less than the standard Black Diamond Spot headlamp.
“We wanted to create a piece of gear as beautiful and natural as the environments we explore with it. At the same time, this headlamp is a functional piece of equipment and we needed it to have exceptional performance in rugged conditions. We’ve used a high powered LED and designed custom parabolic optics to achieve the ideal beam characteristics.”
The company is investing heavily in sustainability by reducing or eliminating harsh chemicals, single use batteries and nearly all plastics from their products, packaging, and supply chain. In addition, the company has pledged to personally plant one tree for every campaign pledge in areas impacted by wildfires and deforestation. Says Doug,
“We were originally planning to make a financial donation for every headlamp, but the Kickstarter rules prohibit the use of campaign funds for charities. Instead of switching to a different platform, we seized it as an opportunity and decided to pledge our time.”
The headlamp is available to super earlybirds for $99 while supplies last, visit (https://kickstarter.com/projects/dougrieck/eukarya) for more info.
