Denver Outdoor Youth Development Programs Get a Boost

Big City Mountaineers to benefit from the Mountain Hardwear Gives Back campaign.

DENVER, Colo. (February 23, 2010) – Three Denver non-profits devoted to youth development have been selected to receive scholarship funds from Mountain Hardwear’s Gives Back campaign.

Mountain Hardwear, a leading outdoor clothing and equipment company, announced Big City Mountaineers, cityWILD, and SOS Outreach will benefit from the Gives Back campaign. Seven other nonprofits outside of Colorado offering youth outdoor recreation programs will also receive funding.Mountain Hardwear allocated $40,000 for the campaign, and will donate one dollar for each click on the Mountain Hardwear Gives Back home page:

"Our friends at Mountain Hardwear understand how life changing the outdoors can be to city kids who've barely left their urban neighborhoods," said Syd Jones executive director of Big City Mountaineers. "The Gives Back campaign is a creative, easy and engaging way for people to provide much needed financial support to help inner city teens improve their lives."

Seth Winnerman, cityWild’s executive director, says the award highlights the potential of collaborations, noting that the three organizations are founding members of the Denver based Youth Development Outdoor Collaborative.

“We’re proud to be supported by Mountain Hardwear and appreciate not only the great products the company produces, but the strong message they send of community responsibility through the Gives Back program,” Winnerman said.“This program does double-duty for us, because we each receive funding and great exposure through their Web site.”

For its part, Mountain Hardwear hopes the scholarship fund will help cultivate a generation of lifelong outdoor enthusiasts.

“This is important to our industry, the company, and to Mountain Hardwear employees on a personal level,” said Alex Baires, co-director of the company’s Gives Back program.“Growing up with an appreciation for the outdoors contributes to a healthy lifestyle and creates future environmental stewards and future customers for our industry.”

The online campaign ends April 15.
