La Sportiva N.A., makers of technical climbing, mountaineering, Mountain Running® and hiking footwear is proud to announce that La Sportiva running athlete Jared Campbell won the brutal Hardrock 100 Endurance Run this past weekend, July 9-10. In an epic battle to the finish, Campbell edged out Diana Finkel in the last few miles to win with a time of 27 hours, 18 minutes.

"It was a great experience for me from start to finish, less a few short-lived rough spots, says La Sportiva’s Jared Campbell. “I focused on running my own race, which in the end paid off. It is so hard to pace yourself for such a long and brutal course. Consequently nearly everyone destroys themselves in the first 50 miles, leaving very little for the equally demanding second half. One of my best friends paced me from miles 58 to 91, after which my wife Mindy took me to the end. It was surreal.”

Diana Finkel’s dream of becoming the first woman to win the Hardrock 100 in its 19-year history came to an end on the final climb of the 100-mile trail that ascends more than 33,000 vertical feet at an average elevation of more than 10,000 feet. While Finkel finished as the women’s three-time champion, painful quadricep cramps eroded her five-minute overall lead shortly after the final aid station, nearly 10 miles from the finish.

Campbell continues, “Diana Finkel is a true machine and I was sorry to see her fall apart so close to the end. On the final climb it was apparent that she was really hurting, her only weak moment after 90 of the most impressive miles ever at Hardrock. She is such a great person and an unbelievable athlete. When she was hurting I was feeling great so she stepped aside and we took off to the finish line.”

Campbell’s performance marked his first Hardrock 100 victory in six attempts. While it is one of the biggest accomplishments for the La Sportiva Mountain Running® team this year, 2010 has been marked with an impressive list of achievements recorded from such athletes as Bernie Boettcher, Jason Bryant, Matt Byrne, Justin Fyffe, Adam Gifford, Laura Haefeli, Megan Kimmel and Leor Pantilat.

La Sportiva teammates Matt Byrne and Jason Bryant are currently placed 1st & 3rd respectively in the 2010 La Sportiva Mountain Cup, while Laura Haefeli and Megan Kimmel are ranked 1st & 2nd in the women’s division. Additionally, Bernie Boettcher currently leads the Master’s Division and continues to remain a threat to all competitors as he has won two overall categories twice this year. Earlier this summer, Megan Kimmel had an impressive showing winning the Vertical Kilometer at Mt Elbrus, Russia, while Leor Pantilat won the classic Way Too Cool 50k in California. Also worth noting is Nathan Yanko’s 4th place finish at the Miwok 100k.
