Brooks-Range Mountaineering Equipment, a manufacturer of high-quality backcountry and mountaineering equipment, has teamed up with Checkpoint Tracker Adventure Racing to host ongoing how-to clinics on navigation and map tools during the Open Air Demo (OAD) at Jordanelle State Park on August 3, 2011. All OAD attendees will be invited to attend these clinics with renowned adventure racers and then compete in an informal, ongoing Adventure Race throughout the OAD grounds.

“Adventure Racing is one of the fastest growing sports in the outdoor industry and Brooks-Range has expanded its Map Tools collection to include Adventure Racing UTM readers and plotters that help adventure racers navigate the backcountry,” said Jeff Blakely, general manager of Brooks-Range. “We are so excited to bring these tools to the Open Air Demo so we can show outdoor enthusiasts how to enhance their navigations skills and learn more about this exciting sport.”

During the clinics that will be running on the hour throughout the day, Peter Jolles from Checkpoint Tracker will give attendees a taste of orienteering and illustrate how to utilize Brooks-Range Map Tools when exploring the backcountry or competing in an adventure race. Attendees can then participate in a friendly orienteering race to put their new navigation skills to the test as they search out the four “checkpoints” throughout the AOD grounds. At the end of the day, all the racers will be entered in a raffle drawing and Brooks-Range will pick five winners to receive free gear from Brooks-Range, including: an Alpini 30° sleeping bag, Cirro jacket, an Ultralite Guide Tarp, a Sleeping Bag Cover, and a Backcountry Shovel.

The navigation clinics will take place in the Brooks-Range booth and will start on the hour throughout the day. Attendees can then race the orienteering course and find their checkpoints anytime during OAD. At the end of the day, when they drop off their completed map, they will be entered into the drawing for the free Brooks-Range prizes.
