GOLDEN, Colo. (September 15, 2014) — Big City Mountaineers (BCM) announces the launch of its Summit for Someone™ (SFS) fundraising climb series, the premier mountaineering fundraiser in the country. Funds raised through SFS support BCM’s mission to instill critical life skills in under-resourced youth through transformative wilderness mentoring expeditions. Since its inception, nearly 2,000 climbers have raised over $5.5M for the program.
High altitude mountaineer and best-selling author Ed Viesturs is the spokesperson for the SFS program and believes in the transformational impact of BCM expeditions on youth. Viesturs said, “For many, participating in the SFS program is the experience of a lifetime and an opportunity to provide a similar experience for under-resourced youth. Through BCM expeditions, kids learn to overcome challenges, set new personal goals, and become stronger, more productive, thriving members of their communities. It’s a win-win.” In June 2015, Viesturs will continue his support of BCM by leading two climbs of Mt. Hood to benefit BCM kids.
The vital funding that is raised through Summit for Someone makes it possible for Big City Mountaineers to deliver transformational wilderness mentoring expeditions to 1,000 underserved urban youth across the country in need of positive adult mentorship. SFS participants travel and climb the world’s premier mountains while positively impacting the lives of urban youth. Climbers choose from 33 separate climbs on 20 classic peaks including the Grand Teton, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Kilimanjaro or they can create their own challenge. Sponsors of the program include Backpacker Magazine, Climbing Magazine, Jansport, Black Diamond, Osprey, Gregory, Thule, Smartwool, Mammut .
Participants who register prior to October 1st can use the discount code SFSEARLY150 to receive $150 off their initial donation to reserve their spot in this world-class program. About Big City Mountaineers
Big City Mountaineers (BCM), which serves youth in eight cities across the country, was founded in 1989 to instill critical life skills in underserved urban youth through transformative wilderness mentoring expeditions. BCM's model is to partner with a vibrant network of youth-based agencies that work with under-resourced, racially diverse young people who often have no experience outside of their neighborhoods. BCM expeditions provide under-resourced youth with the tools and positive reinforcement needed to overcome obstacles and strive for a better future. BCM leverages the challenges inherent in wilderness adventure with a one-to-one mentoring model and time-tested curriculum designed to teach and empower youth.
