“Give credit where credit is due.” Though's mom may have taught no other manners, she definitely hammered this one home. And since the online retailer of high-end outdoor gear would be nothing without… high-end outdoor gear, it's only appropriate to give a big shout out to the companies that make and market the goods.

That's why, at its annual rowdy (and non-mom-friendly) Adventure Party on Oct. 4, will give much deserved props to its 2008 Vendors of the Year: Black Diamond Equipment, Ltd. and Patagonia.

“Our vendors are our partners. When they go over and above business-as-usual when working with us, we definitely take notice,” said Jeff Snyder, VP of Merchandising at

Backcountry acknowledges one hard goods and one soft goods vendor each year. To select the Vendors of the Year,'s buyers consider each of their partners' brand-generated customer relationship, year-over-year sales, GMROI, inventory availability, and marketing support.

This year, Black Diamond earns MVP honors among hard goods vendors and Patagonia gets the nod as the soft goods standout.

“Both Patagonia and Black Diamond are open to new, creative ways of marketing through the online channel,” said Snyder. “Black Diamond is a consistent category leader in innovative new products and has made a strong commitment to marketing support – a huge factor in their year-over-year sales growth. Patagonia just ‘gets' B2B initiatives and partner marketing. It's a company that walks the walk in putting its customers first, giving them every opportunity to find and buy the gear that they're looking for.”

Besides deep and honest appreciation and a big standing O from all the employees of, representatives from Black Diamond and Patagonia will get free admission to the party's all-you-can-eat buffet, drinks on the house, an “It's a VOY-er!” t-shirt, and a small engraved plaque worthy of any company break room. Mom would be so proud.
