Osage, Iowa – A life-size Sock Monkey takes the wheel of an all-new 2011 Kia Sorento CUV during a 60-second ad to run in the third quarter of the big game Sunday. Sock Monkey—the century-old beloved toy handmade from Fox River Mills’ Original Rockford Red Heel® work socks—leads a gang of toys through a series of dream-like adventures.
This comes at a time when the Sock Monkey has seen a growth in popularity as Americans explore renewed interest in crafts and simpler toys for simpler times. The original Sock Monkeys were handmade from Original Rockford Red Heel® socks produced by Nelson Knitting of Rockford, Illinois. When Fox River Mills purchased Nelson in 1992 to expand its own line of quality work socks, the firm continued the tradition of including a Sock Monkey pattern with every pair of Original Rockford Red Heel® socks purchased. Today, the Sock Monkey’s likeness can be seen on a variety of clothing, toys and souvenirs. But the life-size Sock Monkey will only be seen behind the wheel of the all-new 2011 Kia Sorento CUV. The Sorento is the first vehicle produced in Kia’s first U.S. plant in West Point, Georgia . The life-size Sock Monkey was made by Fox River’s long-time friend and monkey crafter Bonnie Connelly of In My Own Dream Studio in Sparta, New Jersey.
