REI has announced plans to open a new store in Sandy, Utah, in spring 2003. The Sandy store will serve 43,000 active members in the Salt Lake metropolitan area. It will be located in the South Towne Center shopping complex at West 10600, near the intersection of Interstate 15 and South Street. REI currently operates a store in Salt Lake City on 3300 South. The Sandy store will be 21,500-square-feet and employ approximately 60 full- and part-time staff. It will carry a full selection of top brands, as well as REI's own exclusive line of outdoor gear and clothing for hiking, camping, climbing, cycling, winter sports and travel. The Sandy store will also include a camp stove demonstration area, a water-filter testing station, a hiking boot testing rock and a climbing boulder, plus space to climb into tents and heft backpacks.
