Outdoor Industry Association preps for big #VoteTheOutdoors social media push

Outdoor Industry Association is asking for a favor. But not a favor that solely benefits the association—one that could positively impact everyone who enjoys the outdoors.

On Monday, expect to see a flurry of #VoteTheOutdoors posts on social media from outdoorists, brands, and retailers promoting the election of outdoor advocates to Congress and governorships across the country.

What OIA wants is your participation. Here's an example of what you'll see and what you can contribute:

  • No matter your political stripes, the outdoors brings us together. Pledge to #VoteTheOutdoors this November, and get educated + empowered with @OIA’s Voters Guide.

“After an election cycle where we have seen unprecedented attacks on our national monuments and a failure by Congress to reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund—the most successful public lands funding program in our nation’s history—the outdoor industry is ready to make our voices heard and help elect Republican and Democratic candidates who will stand up for our public lands and who recognize the power of the outdoor recreation economy,” OIA Executive Director Amy Roberts said in a news release. “The 2018 midterms are our moment and we are asking for every outdoor-minded business and individual to help to amplify this message on their brand and personal social media channels on Oct. 15—and continue a social media storm through Election Day on Nov. 6.”

The Vote the Outdoors campaign—complete with a Congressional Scorecard and Voters Guide—started at Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in July. OIA also has endorsed congressional and gubernatorial candidates who are champions of the outdoors.

OIA's past efforts led to the outdoor recreation economy's inclusion in the Bureau of Economic Analysis report as 2.2 percent of the GDP.

The American Hiking Society also launched a Vote Public Lands campaign to encourage members and supporters to get involved ahead of the midterm elections.
