MSR Trekker Tarp

Two of the SNEWS crew headed into the wilderness of Oregon for a week to test gear. Bottom line, they've always been tarp tent people. However it takes only one buggy night to make you wish for a tent with good mesh panels to keep the pests out. MSR's two-part tarp tent package makes for bug-free tarp camping. Part One is a screen mesh tent (insert) with a nylon floor. Trekking poles guyed by nylon cord at either end and four stakes at the tent's corners and the tent is up and ready for occupancy.

When the weather gets nasty, as it did on our trip, you drape Part Two, a full tarp, over the mesh tent. Held in place by buckles at the tent's peak and tent stakes at its corners, the tarp offers complete coverage and adds two roomy vestibules. So you've got your options covered.

The Trekker Tarp combination is roomy enough for two adults and a small dog.

Weight: 2 pounds, 12 ounces without insert. Insert adds 1 pound.

Floor area: 66 square feet

Insert floor area: 34 square feet

SNEWS Rating: 4.5 hands clapping (1 to 5 hands clapping possible, with 5 clapping hands representing functional and design perfection.)

Suggested retail: Trekker Tarp, $130; Mesh with floor insert, $80.

We've said it before, and we'll say it again -- pumping water ranks right up there with changing the cat litter. It's a chore we'd prefer to skip altogether. So we applaud attempts to create water-treatment devices that cut out the cranking. MSR's new and very compact, very more
