The Munich, Germany-based, sporting goods trade show ispo has announced the dates for the coming ispo summer and ispo winter events for the next three years. Ispo summer will start the first Sunday in July and last three days, and ispo winter will start the first Sunday in February for a four-day run.
Ispo winter dates are as follows: 2004, Feb. 1-4; 2005, Feb. 6-9; 2006, Feb. 5-8. Ispo summer dates are as follows: 2004, July 4-6; 2005, July 3-5; 2006, July 2-4.
This news was greeted positively by outdoor industry companies SNEWS talked with that conduct business on both sides of the pond because beginning in 2005, ispo falls almost one week after Outdoor Retailer's scheduled Winter Market dates of January 28-31. Unfortunately, winter 2004 dates still overlap by one day.
Still, the move is significant since an increasing number of U.S. outdoor brands compete successfully in the European market and have felt the pinch from overlapping dates to the point that some companies sent their executives and key salespeople to ispo last year and not Outdoor Retailer, while others attempted the absurd by having key staff attend OR for one day then jet to ispo for a day or two -- talk about nuts!
Lee Turlington, global director for Nike ACG apparel, said, "To be able to attend the lead shows for both Europe and America is great news, as it relieves heavy pressure for global brands."
Adds Peter Metcalf, "Hallelujah! The coordination of dates again allows manufacturers and retailers who need to participate in Europe's and America's core shows to do so."
