Half-Moon Outfitters, a retail member of the Grassroots Outdoor Alliance buying group, celebrated the grand opening of its third and, for 2008, final location in Charleston, S.C., on Nov. 19. Ten percent of all sales from the store's opening day were being donated to the Coastal Conservation League and The Nature Conservancy.

Charleston Mayor Joe Riley cut a ceremonial green ribbon at 5:15 p.m., proclaiming the store officially open. Beezer Molten, owner of Half-Moon, told SNEWS® earlier this year that he would open three new stores in 2008. Already open are locations in Athens and Atlanta, Ga. (Click here to read an April 10, 2008, news release, "Three New Stores and a Fifteenth Anniversary for Half-Moon Outfitters.")

Half-Moon built this, the largest and its ninth store overall, in a vacant movie theater that once anchored one end of the decades-old shopping center. The store is over 11,000 square feet and will feature the very climbing wall that was the centerpiece of the 2008 Outdoor Retailer Winter Market in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Since 2007, all new Half-Moon stores utilize the green construction techniques that the company honed in the renovation of its distribution center, a LEED certified (Platinum) building. Every product that passes through Half-Moon's doors is processed at this carbon-negative facility. Solar power, rainwater harvesting and extremely efficient systems are all features of the 10,000-square-foot distribution center and main offices for the retailer. All of Half-Moon's new stores are built with paints that are largely free of VOCs, lumber and building materials that are either rapidly renewable or regionally harvested, and fixtures that are reclaimed or recycled. When possible, the company negotiates with landlords, such as the Sadler Group of South Windermere Charleston, to enhance the systems of the building, including insulation, storefront glass, lighting and HVAC systems.

SNEWS® View: All of us at SNEWS are loudly applauding Half-Moon and Molten not only for the success of a third store opening in a challenged economy, but for the leadership being shown that demonstrates good businesses run the right way with the right ideas and in a sustainable fashion reap rewards.
