The new Gore Airvantage and Vasque's Super Alpinista have won ispo's
Outdoor Awards for innovation in textiles and footwear. The awards were
announced Jan. 31 on the eve of the ispo trade fair for sporting goods
in Munich, Germany.
The awards were judged in four categories, including textiles,
footwear, hardware, and special, with a panel of nine judges who looked
for function, quality, technical use, innovation, user friendliness,
In the textile category, W.L.Gore's new Airvantage system won accolades
for its use of air chambers to regulate a user's warmth and therefore
comfort. The system uses two windproof and waterproof Gore membranes
with an inflatable air chamber that can be adjusted to suit a user's
comfort needs. The system will be used initially in winter jackets and
vests for outdoor products.
The Super Alpinista by Vasque won first prize in the category footwear.
The jury said it was the first time that a company had succeeded to
combine function with light weight in a mountaineering boot for extreme
conditions, especially ice climbing. The boot uses Five Ten's climbing
specific (or high-friction) Stealth Rubber outsole with four different
materials, and an upper from Exotherm that is warm, light, and flexible.
Other winners included the Safe Sail System by the Spanish company
Ternua for hardware, and in the Special category Cerax Nanowax by
Nanogate Coating Systems was awarded the top prize.
