Did you hear?... Upswings in outdoor activities for teens

Teens may be more overweight than they were a decade ago, but a couple of upswings in outdoor activities noted in the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association's just-out report Teens & Sports in America are worthy of note.

Teens may be more overweight than they were a decade ago, but a couple of upswings in outdoor activities noted in the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association's just-out report Teens & Sports in America are worthy of note. Of all the activities surveyed, including sports, team sports, recreational, and other outdoor activities, tent camping among 12-17 year olds was the fourth-largest growth area, up 42 percent from a decade ago. And mountain biking was up 88 percent. Note that the teen population has grown 20 percent, so 20-percent growth basically means no growth, and most activities failed to keep up with the overall teen population surge. Hiking stayed basically steady with 1999, the first year it was tracked by the SGMA.
