Word out of Colorado is that REI is relocating its Westminster, Col., store to Boulder, Col., following a September reader poll that asked which store not currently in the area would the readers most like to see in Boulder. Readers voted IKEA and REI into a tie for first place. Of course, SNEWS® readers know that real estate deals do not happen overnight, and REI confirmed the move to Boulder was in the works well before the survey was released. The "new" REI store is slated to open in May 2002 in the Boulder Plaza Shopping Center. Reason for the move? Westminster sales began to drop off once REI opened the Denver flagship store. Insiders at REI tell us this is a continuation of moves REI is and will be making to ensure its stores are in the right place and serving the greatest number of customers possible. More store-opening announcements are in the works, including a new Sacramento, Calif.-area store (Roseville), also in May. In fact, REI, which currently has 59 stores, may have as many as 64 stores open by the end of 2002.
