Merrell continue to expand a kids footwear program begun two years ago by adding "My First Merrells" targeting newborns ages 3 to 6 months. Set to hit store shelves for Holiday 2002, the new footwear will feature a Merrell soft, silky pigskin upper with removable footbed, elastic sides, and a hook and loop closure at the back. The shoes will retail for $25. "Even the littlest people deserve to feel the comfort of Merrell shoes," says Mary Schoenborn, product manager for Merrell Kids. SNEWS® View: Ummm, like a newborn really cares about the comfort of a shoe? Puleeeze! Let's call this product launch what it really is -- Grandma bait! My First Merrells is all about business and it's yet another strong move by the Lavertue-led team. The kids business now represents 11 percent of Merrell's total U.S. business according to the company. As relatives and Grandmas hit the stores this holiday season, they'll see well-made footwear that's just too cute to bypass and, quicker than you can say "awww, ain't that just cute," Merrell will be ringing up more sales.
