Spokane received more snow in late December than it normally gets in an entire year, Mike Glavin, sales and marketing manager for GSI Outdoors, told SNEWS®. Several large, flat roof buildings -- like the one on GSI's building -- have collapsed due to the heavy snow load, and other businesses, like Wal-Mart, were shut down while large crews and equipment worked to remove the snow.

Rather than wait for contractors and heavy equipment, GSI's team took a slightly different approach -- thank goodness, they had lots of avalanche shovels handy. "To save our building, and our livelihood, GSI employees pitched in and hand-shoveled over half-a-million pounds of snow from our one-acre roof. We worked through last weekend, including New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Warehouse, accounting, customer service, product development, management, and our owners all pitched in. It was a huge effort, and with the recent warming, I am happy to report our building is now safe," Glavin said.

"This project, while painful, has really brought our company together and has given us renewed energy to tackle the challenges of the New Year. Here's to a great 2009!"
