At the recent Canoecopia paddlesports event in Madison, Wis., put on each year by Rutabaga, a large boat manufacturer (yes, we're keeping the name to ourselves) provided SNEWS® a show highlight worthy of mention. Seems the company was doing a ripping good business, selling out of a particular model of canoe on the first day of the show. Thinking quickly on their feet and obviously ever resourceful, the company reps in attendance told Canoecopia staffers they'd be back in a few minutes after paying a visit to the company's local warehouse. Our insiders learned this warehouse was none other than the nearby Dick's Sporting Goods store, where the paddlesport manufacturer simply walked in, purchased the needed model from the retail floor and then took it back to Canoecopia. There, the company continued to write orders, using the boat as a visual aid until Canoecopia ended. Not needing the boat anymore, the manufacturer returned it to Dick's for a full refund. We're sure Dick's will just LOVE learning that it unwittingly helped to drive boat sales at a competitor.
