As the weather finally turned more winter-like, consumers responded in kind, lifting total December retail sales 4.1 percent adjusted over the prior year, according to the latest data from the U.S. Commerce Department. In addition, November 2001 retail sales were revised higher, from an adjusted increase of 3.5 percent to 4.2 percent year-over-year. Holiday sales rose 3.9 percent unadjusted year-over-year, significantly higher than National Retail Federation's original estimate of 2.5 percent to 3.0 percent growth. Strength in sales came from two categories that achieved double-digit gains in December -- stores with sporting goods, hobby, books and music, as well as those with electronics and appliances.
