American mountaineer Brent Bishop joined Peter Hillary, son of Sir Edmund Hillary, on the summit of Mt. Everest in an historic first on May 25, as they followed in their legendary fathers' footsteps to successfully reach the top of the world's tallest mountain. American climber Pete Athans, making his seventh ascent, a non-Sherpa record, joined them on the summit. Bishop is the son of the late legendary climber Barry Bishop, a member of the first American expedition to reach the Everest summit in 1963. The climbers spent about 40 minutes on the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) summit before turning back. In 1994, during the Sagarmatha Environmental Expedition, Bishop became the first American legacy to summit the mountain. This was Peter Hillary’s second successful summit of Everest (1990). Both were part of a National Geographic-sponsored expedition commemorating next year’s 50th anniversary of the mountain’s first ascent by the elder Hillary, and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa.
