Though no officials at either company are talking, SNEWS® has learned that an alliance or partnership is imminent between United Knitting and Polartec. According to reliable sources, United Knitting will soon begin the manufacture of selected performance stretch fabrics exclusively for Polartec. Polartec will, in turn, use its in-house sales force to market those products. SNEWS® View: Though no deal is signed and officials at Polartec would neither confirm nor deny the rumor, we believe the deal to be a virtual certainty. Once owned by Dyersburg, prior to that company going belly up last year, United was sold in July of 2001 to Mallen Industries -- www.mallen.net -- an Atlanta, GA-based manufacturer specializing in production of high-performance textiles for the industrial, automotive, activewear and intimate apparel industries. United brings to Polartec what that company has desperately needed -- a broader range of next-to-skin stretch products. With United's expertise, we will expect to begin seeing Polartec brand fabrics appearing in yoga clothing, fitness wear, and cycling garb.
