The lifestyle brand started out making surf leashes nearly 40 years ago.

From backpacks to surf bags, Dakine has been making gear for outdoor enthusiasts since its founding on Maui's North Shore in 1979. The brand will continue to do so, though under the wing of a growing brand management company.

Marquee Brands LLC announced that it has acquired Dakine and all its related intellectual property. The company also owns Body Glove, as well as four luxury fashion brands—which together generate more than $1.5 million of retail equivalent sales.

“Dakine is a high quality brand with a performance integrity and legacy of innovation that has allowed it to develop a fiercely passionate customer following, and which we believe is ripe with untapped growth potential," Zachary Sigel, managing director of investment management firm Neuberger Berman, said in a news release. "This brand is truly emblematic of the types of acquisitions we seek to make for the Marquee Brands portfolio."

The company plans to focus on making more surf, snow, and bike products for Dakine, while also exploring other categories. Marquee Brands entered into a long-term license agreement with JR286, a premier global sports equipment and accessories company, which will acquire the operating assets of Dakine.

By acquiring Dakine, Marquee Brands steps further into the outdoor market.
