Find out why lightweight gear and avy packs are hot and heavy touring bindings are not at this California retailer.
Mike from Alpenglow Sports

Mike Grobicki is a sales floor representative at Alpenglow Sports.

Established in 1979, Alpenglow Sports is Tahoe City, California’s prime shop for everything outdoor. When snow is falling, Alpenglow is a go-to shop for backcountry skiers and snowboarders. During the summer months, it switches gears and becomes a general outdoor goods shop for hikers and campers.

We caught up with sales floor representative Mike Grobicki, who gave us the rundown on what's moving in the store and what's not this season.

What’s hot right now?

Salomon shift binding

It’s mid-winter and backcountry skiing and snowboarding gear is selling fast—especially Alpine touring gear because more and more people are getting into it and investing in gear. It's lighter and simpler with a huge market surrounding it.

Salomon’s Shift bindings have been popular because they are an all-in-one hybrid touring binding. The bindings are light and provide the rider with a secure lockdown fit.

HOJI PRO TOUR Women’s and Men’s:

Dynafit's Hoji touring boots have been doing exceptionally well at addressing the discomfort skiers have with other boots. It features a unique walk mode and everything is tied together so there’s no fiddling, which was one of skiers' main complaints. It's a solid connecting boot with no compromises.

Avalanche packs have been in demand as well, due to the recent amazing snowfall. Scott’s new Patrol E1 air packs provide significantly less weight and are easier for traveling.

What’s not so hot?

Heavier touring bindings with less features are starting to sit on store shelves longer because there are better options on the market. Telemark skiing gear is also stagnant compared to Alpine touring.
