Athlete’s Guide to Yoga

(Jan 14, 2008) -- Somehow Sage Rountree has managed to maintain her yogic voice – or enough of it to keep some authenticity, which she has by leaps and bounds – while also toning it down just enough to speak directly to an athlete, which she also is by leaps and bounds. Even the cover says YOGA while also saying ATHLETE in its choice of colors, clothing and style – straightforward without all the frou-frou and implied incense-burning and ohmmm of yoga that could turn off some athletes. Great Handbook: Foam Roller
(Jan 31, 2007) -- We tend to like the succinct and consumer-friendly approach of the past "Great Handbooks" by Productive Fitness Products that take hand-holding and simple approaches to showing exercises for simple accessories and tools, such as stretch bands, stability balls and dumbbells. And this newest Foam Roller handbook is just as varied, amazing in exercise selection and thorough. But succinct it is not, and that's where it falls on its face just a bit. Read Full Story...

Advanced Sports Nutrition
(May 22, 2006) -- It's not easy to find nutrition information for overall performance that isn't too technical, too trendy, or aimed at selling a particular product. But Dan Benardot's Advanced Sports Nutrition sets a new standard, giving readers what they want and need through casual writing that's pretty easy to read. Read Full Story...

Performance Nutrition for Winter Sports
(Jan 12, 2006) -- Although there are numerous books on nutrition for athletes, until now, none focused on those who head out for adventures and sports in the snow. Performance Nutrition for Winter Sports by Monique Ryan has, however, now done that. It is written for serious alpine skiers, cross-country skiers, snowboarders, snowshoers and even ice hockey players. Read Full Story...

Great Handbooks: Heavy Bag, Speed Bag
(Oct 23, 2005) -- You can't always personally go home with your customers after they buy your products and show them the ropes, but you can send them off confidently with a good, concise instruction book. The "Great Handbook" series by Productive Fitness Products succinctly focuses on how to use and train with various accessories and equipment found in the fitness industry. Read Full Story...

Core Performance
(May 2, 2005) -- Mark Verstegen has long been known as a trainer to national and international-class athletes (think Mia Hamm and the German national soccer team!), but what he knows and creates can help us everyday folks achieve better fitness or more-accomplished recreational athletic pursuits. Now, he's just launched a website for consumers (www.coreperformance.com) to go with his book, Core Performance, which was released last year and is now out in paperback. Read Full Story...

ACSM Fitness Book
(Nov 29, 2004) -- As the January New Year's Resolution exercise phase nears, it's time to take a look at some simple, solid books for those who really just need to know the basics about what to do for fitness and health. One of the best of the bunch is the ACSM Fitness Book, now in its third edition, that is done by the researchers and experts at the American College of Sports Medicine. No personal agendas or attempts to sell gadgets or videos here. Just proven advice on the basics. Read Full Story...

Lore of Running

Climbing: Training for Peak Performance
(Jan 20, 2003) -- Author Clyde Soles -- in a technical and exacting way -- has penned a, yes, technically exacting book on fitness training with the emphasis on the climber. Of all the training books we've seen for climbing and extreme sports, this one reigns supreme. Read Full Story...

Training Fan fitness guide
(Jul 10, 2002) -- Ever tried to "workout" or do any kind of exercise or drill from a book? First of all, the book keeps trying to slam shut -- annoying, at best -- or you don't have the book with you when you want it because you didn't want to schlepp a big heavy thing to the gym or in your suitcase when you travel. Having such experiences ourselves, the Training Fan caught our eye on an accessories rack at a large sporting goods store -- next to jump ropes and grips. Read Full Story...

Waxing and Care of Skis and Snowboards
(Apr 1, 2002) -- For years the art of waxing skis has carried with it a pseudo-scientific mystique. To be sure, that mystique was promulgated by a handful of people who staked their reputations on knowing the inner secrets of this arcane pursuit. Some have tried to dispel those myths, such as authors Michael Brady and Leif Torgerson. Read Full Story...

I Run, Therefore I Am -- Nuts!
(Mar 18, 2002) -- All of us take our sports and activities a little too seriously sometimes. A little reality slap in the face is a good thing -- and, for running, author Bob Schwartz does just that with this book. Read Full Story...
