NEMO's Meta 2P Wins Backpacker's Editors' Choice

Industry News Release Written By: Kate Ketschek

NEMO Equipment, Inc., manufacturer of AirSupported™ and Extreme Conditions Tents™, sleeping pads and backcountry accessories, has been awarded Backpacker Magazine’s 2010 Editors’ Choice award for its new Meta 2P™ tent.

The award, announced in Backpacker’s 2010 Gear Guide, honors the products that Backpacker editors have chosen as the best of the year based on months of trail testing by teams of highly experienced hikers and climbers. Bestowed annually since 1993 with no set categories for the awards and no set number of recipients, the products and the testing process drive the award categories. Meta 2P™ is one of only 15 innovative products that have been honored with a 2010 Backpacker Editors’ Choice Award.

“In an era of dime-a-dozen digital gear reviews, consumers are looking for product evaluations that they can really trust,” said Backpacker Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Dorn. “And no one does more than our test team to make sure that our selections earn the respect that Backpacker awards get. Led by Gear Editor Kristin Hostetter, the dozen or so core members of our crew hiked more than 15,000 miles this year, then finished our testing for Editors’ Choice with a 100-mile route through the Swiss Alps that entailed more than 60,000 feet of elevation gain, hours of waist-deep postholing, and weather conditions that challenged every piece of gear we packed. The result of the team’s hard work is a collection of smart, durable products that will deliver comfort and performance for many years to come.”

When asked what made Meta 2P™ stand out from the rest, Kristin Hostetter said, “We've always been intrigued by tents that use hiking sticks rather than tent poles, because it's a sure-fire way to knock a couple of pounds off your load. But trekking pole tents always seem to come with one or more compromise. Not the Meta. It's easy to pitch, solid in big gusts, and lavishly roomy. Where's the sacrifice?”
“We wanted to support the community of backpackers using trekking poles, but didn’t want to enter the trekking pole tent category until we could bring our usual balance of comfort and usability,” said Cam Brensinger, NEMO’s founder and president. “We needed to work out a design that could bring 5 lbs. of comfort and space to a 3 lb. tent. It was a good challenge for the NEMO design team and I think we nailed it. We hope Meta 2P™ will inspire the industry to expand its product offerings for these core users and encourage those not yet using trekking poles to give them a try.”

In 2010, NEMO has expanded its product line from 12 to 20 tents, along with 4 sleeping pads, a backcountry pillow and accessories. NEMO was founded in 2002 by Cam Brensinger with the commitment to bringing the highest level of design and engineering to the world of outdoor adventure sports. Besides AirSupported Technology®, NEMO has patents pending for its lightweight pumps, washable floor liners, condensation curtains and many more features and accessories which add functionality and comfort to its shelters. NEMO tents can be found at local, national and international retailers, including Eastern Mountain Sports, REI, and Moosejaw.
