LEKI Skiers Take 27 Medals at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics

Posted: 03/10/2010 In Category: Outdoor Manufacturer

Industry News Release Written By: Cathy Herbstler

LEKI continues to dominate ski racing competition, with Olympic athletes who use the company’s high performance ski poles winning a total of 27 medals, including 10 gold medals, in Alpine and Nordic events at the recent 2010 Winter Games. With a total of 33 medals available in Alpine events alone, athletes who skied with LEKI poles won 16 of those medals, almost half of the total amount.

Prominent U.S. Alpine skiers who medaled with LEKI poles include Lindsey Vonn, Julia Mancuso, and Bode Miller. International stars include Maria Riesch from Germany, Ivica Kostelic from Croatia, and Didier Defago from Switzerland. Most of these athletes use LEKI poles that feature the revolutionary Trigger S grip system, the first “ski pole binding” system in the world. Trigger S is an integrated quick release security system where the connection between the grip and strap or the grip and glove is reduced to a ring shaped loop made from DYNEMA, a gel-spun polyester known for its strength and use in parachute cords and marine racing. Skiers literally click in and out of the grip with one simple hand movement.

Evi Sachenbacher–Stehle and Claudia Nystad from Germany, and Bernhard Gruber and Dominik Landertinger from Austria were just a few of the Nordic medal winners who use LEKI poles. All LEKI Nordic athletes ski with the Super Shark shaft and the Shark Trigger grip/strap system which provides the most power transfer throughout the poling motion. The quick release Shark Trigger offers a particular advantage to biathletes.

“We are proud of each and every LEKI athlete who competed in the Olympics and put their heart and soul into the races in which they participated,” said Greg Wozer, Vice President of LEKI USA. “It’s awesome to see such tremendous athletic talent choosing to use LEKI poles throughout the Winter Games, not to mention during the entire World Cup season.”

LEKI USA, Inc., headquartered at 458 Sonwil Drive Buffalo, NY, is the sole North American distributor of LEKI brand Ski poles, Trekking poles, and Nordic Walking poles. For more information please visit www.LEKI.com or call 800.255.9982.
