(Waitsfield, VT) –1% For the Planet, the fast-growing global network of businesses that donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes, announces the January 5th, 2010 release of a 40-track digital music compilation: 1%: The Music, Vol. One. The album contains rare and exclusive tracks donated from 40 different artists, all with an environmental stance, including Jack Johnson, Brandi Carlile, Jackson Browne, Angilique Kidjo and G. Love, among others.

The digital album retails for $9.98, and all proceeds will go directly to 1% for the Planet in an effort to do more for environmental non-profits all around the world. The music will be available on iTunes and via eco-download cards exclusively in 25 Patagonia stores throughout the holiday season and other retail outlets starting in January. Each album sale represents a deliberate choice to support the environmental movement and affiliation with green-minded artists. “This amazing group of artists giving their time and talent for the environment inspires others to get involved” says Melody Grote, VP Marketing and Business Development at 1% for the Planet.

The all-digital release will be available through online retailers and in stores via an eco-download card. Made from recycled materials, this eco-friendly alternative to physical CDs allows consumers to easily download the tracks at home via a simple process of entering a promo code on a site http://music.onepercentfortheplanet.org, 1% has created to help promote the effort. Individuals can email their friends from the site to check out the music.

A music widget will help spread the word about both organization and the music. “Its an easy way to make a difference for anyone who loves good music” Melody says. Including a video clip of Jack Johnson and Emmet Malloy talking about 1%, the widget also offers streaming clips of each song and the opportunity to buy single tracks or the whole album. Individuals can embed the music widget on their blogs and facebook pages and proceeds will go to help the planet with every album sold. 1% member companies have the opportunity to demonstrate their 1% partnership by posting it on their websites and promoting through newsletters and podcasts. 1% non-profits can also place the widget on their sites and receive $5 from every album they sell.

1% for the Planet: The Music, Vol. 1 is the most recent in a long list of multi-media and social web initiatives for 1% for the Planet, including a mobile application partnership with 3rdWhale that helps users locate green businesses and a 1% film release, One Percent of the Story, produced by Felt Soul Media.
