SNEWS® Live: Keen Footwear offers relief to earthquake refugees in China

SNEWS® Live: On May 12, 2008, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck the Sichuan Province of central China at 2:28 p.m. -- a time when most adults were at work and children were in school. Falling debris from collapsing structures caused most of the causalities. Estimates of the dead or missing range between 65,000 and 80,000 individuals.

More than 15 million people in the region were forced to evacuate. Of them, 5 million lost their homes, creating a desperate situation that will likely remain unresolved for years. Those who survived dwell in tents until new housing can be built.

Hoping to raise the spirits of these Chinese refugees, an outdoor industry company sent a delegation of staffers to provide a bit of relief. As a manufacturer, like many in the industry, whose products are made in China, Keen Footwear felt an obligation to do what it could to help. Field services and cause marketing manager Lynda Tom traveled to the earthquake-ravaged area. SNEWS® Live spoke with Tom at the Keen booth during Outdoor Retailer 2008 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to bring you this story.
