The challenge
Working within the Merchandising and Product Development Calendar, the Technical Designer will manage the specification process for the development and execution of specified classifications of merchandise for the Athleta Brand catalog and web site. This position will be reviewed and evaluated on ability to meet company sales contribution (top line) and gross margin requirements (bottom line). Targeted metrics will include return rates, vendor performance, production delivery and sample receipt. Key responsibilities include:
1. Conduct fit sessions.
Incorporate Designer's and MPM's comments with appropriate fit measurements.
Evaluate samples for fit, function, balance, movement, proportion, construction,
workmanship, and label sew method.
Establish specs on all points of measure.
Fit coordinated styles together.
Determine size scale and packaging method.
Final determination if style is approved or rejected.
2. Produce technical comments based on fit sessions.
Reports to include:
Fully detailed written instructions to improve the fit and quality of each garment
Photos of problem fit areas for review by vendor
Detailed sketches - updated
Bill of Materials – fabric, trim, label information
Construction information updated
Garment measurements - including changes
Graded measurements
Pattern modifications
3. Evaluate proposed design and fabric for potential problems and suggest alternatives, if needed.
4. Provide photo sample approval and specification in required sizes.
5. Evaluate all top of production, preproduction and size set samples
6. Release of production spec within the merchandising timeline
Adhere to Product Development Calendar.
Meet all applicable deadlines.
Manage the fit process to ensure that styles are approved in a timely manner.
Encourage incorporation of all styling changes in first fitting.
Manage vendor sampling timelines.
Approve all styles on or before the third fit.
Communicate any late approval issues to Merchandising Product Manager.
Communicate with VP, TD, Vendors, and internally.
Discuss potential issues suggest solutions and/or resolve issues as possible.
Keep vendors up to date on all relevant information relating to fit, sample tracking,
production and quality expectations.
Inform MPM's of all applicable vendor or delivery problems.
Work with DC to resolve any quality control issues.
Your training
College Degree- BS/BA, preferably in Apparel Technical Design and Quality
Assurance.
5+ years industry experience in Misses apparel, preferably in swim, athletic, fitness,
outdoor and/or casual sportswear.
Thorough knowledge of fit and balance - pattern making experience a plus
Quality Assurance testing and production experience a plus!
Manufacturing and factory experience - travel and QC experience a plus!
Strong analytical and organizational skills with proficiency in Microsoft applications-
Excel, Word, Outlook, Adobe Illustrator as well as industry specification package
experience.
Excellent communication skills and problem solving ability.
Ability to work in a team environment.
