SNEWS® Live:  The biannual breakfast meeting of the Conservation Alliance welcomed a packed audience to Outdoor Retailer Summer Market 2007 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The keynote speaker was author, photographer and naturalist Jonathan Waterman. With slides and stories of his recent adventures in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge of Alaska, commonly known as ANWR, Waterman painted an elaborate and compelling image of an endangered wilderness that few will ever see firsthand.
      
He also put into historical perspective the previous generations of explorers who helped establish the refuge. Recounting the efforts of husband and wife naturalists Olaus and Mardy Murie, as well as field biologist George Schaller. Waterman explained that the research efforts of the past ultimately inform the conservation initiatives of the present and the future.

Waterman took a seat behind our microphones at the SNEWS® booth on the show floor to share with us what he's learned.
