Article Thumbnail SNEWS View: Drowning in catalogs and press kits -- what a waste
Jul 15, 2009
An alert reader sent us the photo below, showing three stacks of promotional materials for the upcoming Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, all containing invites to come by a booth and check out the new wares. This is a specialty retailer who, like many, would honestly prefer to receive just one catalog or press kit for the store prior to any trade show. And, to make it worse...

Nationwide, editors vote to recognize good PR and offer tips for better communication. This year, we commend those that made the top ten. If you are mentioned, you are being recognized by our voting panel of journalists as providing exceptional service, not only to us, but also to your clients and employers. We've been told that these awards, and the commentary provided by our voting panel, help to raise the bar for everyone and that they serve as a means to spawn improvement for PR agencies and individuals who seek to become better at the job counted on by so many members of the media. Oh...and there's a bonus sidebar where PR folk tell the media just what we need to do to make their jobs easier.

Nationwide, editors vote to recognize good PR and offer tips for better communication. A great PR person is worth his or her weight in gold to a journalist, not to mention to the company for which he or she works. We know it's not an easy job all the time to satisfy us demanding journalists as well as to please company management, which is why we established the now infamous SNEWS® Editors' Voice PR Awards four years ago. We felt it was high time to recognize a stellar performance in the face of so much stellar and, well, not so stellar execution. The bottom line is, we don't need continual harassment, endless pestering, and nonsensical and fluffy no-news press releases. To do our jobs well, we need relevant and timely information, a conduit to the powers-that-be for interviews, products to test, and sometimes – we admit it – we want it last week. PR folk that help us to do our jobs well should be commended because, without them, our lives would be infinitely more challenging.

Good PR is worth its weight in gold, both to the media and the company. We've been told by fellow scribes that our awards have not only made better PR people out of some, but also led their companies to appreciate what they do a bit more. Yes, we all have horror stories. But in the glee to share the bad, we sometimes forget the good stuff, the golden PR people out there who make our lives easier while also getting their companies great exposure in the media. So in order not to sound like horribly jaded and negative journalists all the time, we established these PR Awards three years ago. That way the good would get the recognition it deserved....

Jul 12, 2002
On the heels of last year's Editors' Voice awards, our fellow media compatriots have told us the PR world has sharpened up its act, and we're grateful for all of us, whether that's because of or in spite of us! We've also heard from many PR folk who thanked us for last year's awards process and information, telling us too that many learned how better to communicate with the media as a result and, best of all, many received job offers too.

Article Thumbnail SNEWS First Annual "Editors' Voice" PR/Marketing Awards
Jun 1, 2001
Any journalist or editor knows the value of a really good PR/marketing person for a company, either in-house or outside agency. We at SNEWS are reminded of that daily when PR folks come through with the information we need quickly and efficiently, or make us pull out our hair trying to get the tiniest detail. We also hear constantly from our fellow journalists and editors, free-lance and staffers alike about this. So, we decided, if companies can give journalists awards, then we journalists should and can give PR/marketing agencies and staff our own awards for excellence. Being an independent voice, SNEWS chose to make the first "Editors' Voice" awards a reality.
